Popular Dogs - Poodles

Poodle's are one of the top ten breeds of dog according to the AKC (American Kennel Club). These dogs originated in Central Asia, even though many people mistakenly think their origins are in France. They were initially that retrieved game from the surface of the water for hunters, but in recent times have become popular household pets.

These dogs have had a number of different jobs over the years which include being guide dogs, guard dogs, pulling wagons for performers and circus performers. They are often associated with fashion, and was the favorite pet of many aristocrats in France, becoming the official dog of France. From then on, they have grown to become one of the most popular household pets.

Most poodle dogs are standard type or miniature type. Standard poodles are recognised as being obedient and intelligent. They are playful, adventurous dogs who like to swim, run and retrieve objects. These qualities make the standard poodle an ideal pet and are also excellent with kids. The miniature version is also smart and obedient. They like to please their owners, are great with kids and other pets. Like the standard poodle, they also make great pets.

Poodles are suited to indoor living, and should not be kept outdoors. As mentioned earlier, they enjoy human company and living indoors as part of the family.

Both versions of this breed of dog have a lifespan of about 13 years. The miniature poodle have been known to live longer than this. Their main potential health issues include PRA, patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes and epilepsy. Standard poodles main health issue are gastric torsion, sebaceous adenitis and Addisons disease. It is recommended that both should be tested for eye problems, hip dysplasia and vWD.

The poodle has had many jobs over the years, but has finally been recognized as one of the best house pets, and because of this has entered the top ten dogs breeds in the United States today.
