Popular Dog Breeds - Miniature Schnauzers

Miniature Schnauzers are seen by many as the most popular member of the Schnauzer dog family. Originating from Germany in the 1800's, they are a mixture of two breeds of dog - the Affenpinscher and the Schnauzer. The Miniature Schnauzer was breed was recognized in 1899, but only recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1933.

The larger, standard Schnauzer existed in the United States and was popular there long before the Miniature version. However, the smaller dog has become a more popular pet than its larger relation.

These dogs are alert, inquisitive and are excellent companions. They are an active breed of dog and are also calm and well mannered indoors. Less aggressive than the standard Schnauzer, they interact well with other pets and humans. For these reasons, they make excellent indoor pets, are great with kids and are watchdogs.

This breed of dog required plenty of exercise including long walks on a leash or run in the yard on a daily basis. They are more suited to living indoors, but can be kept outside and prefer to be part of a 'pack' at all times.

Miniature Schnauzers need to be groomed with a heavy brush at least once a week. They have wiry, thick hair and sometimes require professional grooming, typically every 2 to 3 months.

Their typical lifespan is up to 14 years for healthy dogs. Veterinarians suggest you should get these dogs tested for myotinia congenite, vWD and type A PRA. Health concerns include urolithiasis, PRA, Allergies and Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome.
