A very popular breed, the German Shepherd is the third most popular dog according to the AKC (American Kennel Club). It was initially bred as a guard or hunting dog, and looks similiar to a wolf which is it's ancestor.

The German Shepherd has had a number of changes to it's name over the years. It originated in Germany and because of this, it was officially called a German Shepherd. It was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1931, and has been a popular family pet for many years.

These dogs have proven to be excellent companions for humans. Their strengths include being very good watchdog's, protection abilities and are able to adapt to training. They are not the most affectionate or playful breeds of dog, but are still one of the best dogs to have as pets.

They require both physical and mental challenges each day. They are capable of learning new obedience lessons and tricks on a daily basis and are very intelligent pets. They are active dogs and enjoy physical activities like running and long walks.

The main health issue to watch out for are Elbow Dysplasia and CHD. Other, less serious health issues include cateracts, hot spots, gastric torsion, malignant neoplasms and skin allergies. Healthy dogs can live up to twelve years, so long as their owner takes good care of them. Veterinarians suggest testing for hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.
